    Guide

    Post-treatment care and recovery

What to do in the days after a session, and why it makes a difference to your result.

LMC Slimming Centre, Lyttelton, Centurion. Reading time roughly 4 minutes.

The treatment itself takes an hour or so. The part that determines how well it works takes the following few days, and that part is yours.

Most of the technologies used in a contouring programme do not remove anything from your body directly. Cavitation and laser lipo break down fat cells and release their contents. Cryolipolysis damages fat cells so that your body recognises them as waste. In every case what follows is a clearing job, handled by your lymphatic system and your liver. How well that job goes depends partly on what you do between sessions.

    Hydration

Water, more than you think you need

This is the single most useful thing you can do, and the one most often skipped.

Your lymphatic system moves the broken-down material away from the treated area, and it needs fluid to do it. Aim for two to three litres a day, starting the day of your treatment and continuing through the days after. If you have been treated in the morning, most of that should be in you by evening rather than in the last hour before bed.

Herbal tea counts. Coffee and alcohol do not, and both are worth easing back on for a day or two, which is covered below.

    Movement

    Keep moving, gently

Your lymphatic system has no pump of its own. Unlike blood, which the heart moves for you, lymph relies on muscle contraction and body movement to keep circulating. Sitting still for two days after a session slows exactly the process you have paid for.

This does not mean training hard. A twenty to thirty minute walk on the day of treatment and each day after is enough, and for many people it is more useful than a gym session, because it is sustainable and it keeps the whole system ticking over. If you already train, carry on as normal unless the treated area feels tender.

    What to Avoid

Two things to hold off on

    Alcohol

Your liver processes the fatty acids released during treatment. Alcohol gives it a competing job to do and it will prioritise clearing the alcohol. Giving it a clear run for around 48 hours means the work you have just done gets processed properly.

Very hot baths, saunas and steam rooms

Skip these for a day or two after any heat-based treatment such as radio frequency or Vela Sculpture. The treated tissue is already warm and slightly inflamed, and adding more heat is uncomfortable without adding benefit.

    What is Normal

What is normal in the days after

    After cryolipolysis

The area will usually be red, firm and a little swollen when the applicator comes off, and this settles over the following hours. Numbness or a pins-and-needles feeling in the treated area is common and can last anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. It resolves on its own. Tenderness, mild bruising and itching in the area are all normal in the first week. Your therapist will usually massage the area straight after treatment, which is part of the protocol rather than an optional extra.

After cavitation, laser lipo or radio frequency

The area may feel warm and look slightly pink for an hour or two. Most people go straight back to their day with nothing visible. A mild ringing in the ears during cavitation is a known effect of the sound frequency and passes when the session ends.

    After HIEMS

Expect the same muscle soreness you would get from a hard session in the gym, usually a day later, because functionally that is what has happened. It eases within a couple of days and tends to lessen as your body adapts across a course.

    Nutrition

    Eating around your sessions

There is no special diet attached to a contouring programme, and any clinic promising one is overselling. What helps is keeping your intake sensible on treatment days: a light meal rather than a heavy one beforehand, and enough protein across the week to support the muscle work if your programme includes HIEMS.

The results you get from a course are yours to keep or lose afterwards. The fat cells cleared during treatment do not come back, but the ones still in the area can enlarge if your weight climbs significantly. Steady eating habits protect the investment.

    When to Contact Us

    When to call us

Most of what happens after a session is expected and settles by itself. Get in touch if any of the following applies:

    • Pain that is getting worse rather than better after the first few days
    • Skin that blisters, breaks or changes colour markedly in the treated area
    • Numbness that has not started improving after about six weeks
    • Swelling that increases rather than reduces over the first week

Call or WhatsApp 082 695 0427. It is always better to ask.

Getting the most from your programme

If you are partway through a course, the water and the walking are what will carry your result between appointments. If you have not started yet and you are trying to work out which programme suits you, that is a conversation rather than a guess.
