    How does cryolipolysis work?

    About the Treatment

Say goodbye to stubborn fat that refuses to budge with diet and exercise. Our Cryolipolysis treatment is a non-invasive, scientifically proven method designed to target and eliminate localised fat cells. By using precisely controlled cooling technology, we safely expose targeted fat cells to temperatures that trigger a natural process called apoptosis (programmed cell death), without damaging the surrounding skin, nerves, or muscle tissue.

Because fat cells are more sensitive to cold than other tissue types, they crystallise and are naturally processed and cleared by your body's lymphatic system over the following weeks. Because this treatment is completely non-surgical, it requires no needles, no incisions, and no downtime, just a gradual, natural-looking improvement that lasts.

Why choose our Fat Freezing treatment?

    • Targeted Precision: Treats stubborn areas such as the abdomen, flanks, thighs and arms with precision.
    • Long-Lasting Results: Once treated fat cells are processed and removed by your body, they do not return.
    • Zero Downtime: Return to your daily routine immediately after your session.
    • Natural Transformation: A gradual, subtle improvement that looks smooth and completely natural.

Being straight with you about the risks

Cryolipolysis is a well-established, non-invasive treatment with a strong safety record, and the vast majority of clients experience nothing more than temporary redness, numbness or tenderness that settles within days.

There is one rare complication you deserve to hear about before you book: paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, or PAH. In a small number of cases the treated area gradually becomes firmer and larger instead of smaller, usually showing up a few months after a session. It is not dangerous and it is not a health risk, but it does not resolve on its own, it is corrected with liposuction or minor surgery.

Published rates vary depending on the study. Manufacturer data puts it at roughly 0.03%, or about 1 in 3,000 people treated. A 2025 review pooling 28 studies and more than 13,000 patients put it higher, at 0.22%, roughly 1 in 450. It appears to be more common in men and in abdominal treatments, and newer-generation equipment has been associated with markedly lower rates.

We would rather you heard this from us than found it online afterwards. We will talk you through it properly at your consultation, along with anything in your history that makes you a better or worse candidate for fat freezing.

    The Questions Worth Asking

Any clinic can tell you what a treatment does. We would rather tell you what it does, what it does not do, and what can go wrong, so you can make a decision you feel good about.

    Is fat freezing safe?
Cryolipolysis is non-invasive, needle-free and has a strong safety record built over more than a decade of clinical use. Most side effects are temporary and mild: redness, swelling, numbness, tingling or tenderness in the treated area, usually settling within days to a couple of weeks. There is one rare complication worth knowing about, paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, which we explain in the next question rather than burying it.
What is paradoxical adipose hyperplasia (PAH)?
PAH is a rare response in which the treated area gradually becomes firmer and larger rather than smaller. It typically appears a few months after treatment. It is not painful, it is not dangerous, and it carries no health risk, but it does not go away on its own, and correcting it requires liposuction or minor surgery. Published incidence ranges from about 0.03% in manufacturer data to 0.22% in a 2025 review pooling 28 studies and over 13,000 patients, somewhere between 1 in 3,000 and 1 in 450. Research suggests it occurs more often in men, more often in abdominal treatments, and less often with newer-generation equipment. We raise this at every fat-freezing consultation before you commit.
How will I know if something is not right after my treatment?
Come back and see us. We schedule follow-ups so we can track your progress properly, and we would far rather look at something that turns out to be normal healing than have you sit at home wondering. If the treated area is getting firmer or larger over the weeks and months instead of softer and smaller, tell us as soon as you notice it.
Who is not a good candidate for fat freezing?
Cryolipolysis is a contouring treatment for stubborn, localised fat in people who are already close to their goal weight, it is not a weight-loss treatment and it will not do the work of diet and exercise. It is also not appropriate for people with certain cold-sensitivity conditions such as cryoglobulinaemia, cold agglutinin disease or paroxysmal cold haemoglobinuria, for anyone with a hernia in the treatment area, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding. We go through your full history at consultation and will tell you honestly if fat freezing is the wrong tool for what you want.
When will I see results, and are they permanent?
Fat cells that are destroyed are processed and cleared by the body over the following weeks. Most people start to notice a change from around three to four weeks, with the fuller result settling in over two to three months. Those specific fat cells do not come back, but the remaining cells can still grow, so your result holds best alongside stable weight and a consistent routine.
