Guide
The ultimate guide to body contouring
What non-surgical contouring can do, what it cannot, and how to tell whether it is the right next step for your body.
LMC Slimming Centre, Lyttelton, Centurion. Reading time roughly 8 minutes.
You have done the work. The training is consistent, the eating is clean, and the scale has moved. There is still a pocket of fat across your lower stomach that will not shift, or skin along your inner thighs that has gone softer than it used to be, and nothing you do seems to reach it.
That is not a willpower problem. It is a biology problem, and biology responds to a different set of tools.
This guide covers what body contouring actually is, how the individual technologies work, what the research shows about results, and how to work out whether you are a good candidate. It is written to help you make an informed decision, including the decision that this is not for you right now.

Understanding
What body contouring actually means
Body contouring is a group of non-surgical treatments that change the shape of a specific area rather than your overall weight. It works on the fat cells in a defined zone, on the skin covering that zone, or on the muscle underneath it.
It is not a weight loss programme. The people who see the best results are usually already close to their goal weight and are dealing with something specific: a stubborn area, loose skin after significant weight loss, or a region that has never held much definition no matter how hard they train.
The limits matter as much as the possibilities. Contouring will not replace a considered diet, it will not treat obesity, and it will not deliver what surgery delivers. What it does well is address what is left once diet and training have taken you as far as they reasonably can.
The Science
Why some fat refuses to move
When you lose weight, your body chooses where it comes from. You do not get a vote in that. It is why two women can follow the same programme for twelve weeks and one loses it from her waist while the other loses it from her face and arms while her hips stay exactly the same.
Spot reduction, the idea that training a body part burns the fat sitting on top of it, does not hold up. Crunches build the muscle beneath your abdominal fat. They do not preferentially burn that fat.
Contouring takes a different route. Rather than asking your body to release fat from an area you have chosen, it acts on the fat cells in that area directly.

The Approach
One body, addressed from four angles
A single machine treats a single problem. Most stubborn areas involve more than one. A softer stomach after weight loss is fat and loose skin and weakened muscle underneath, so treating only the fat leaves two thirds of the issue in place. This is why structured programmes combine technologies rather than repeating one.
Fat reduction
Cryolipolysis, ultrasonic cavitation and laser lipo target the fat cells themselves, breaking them down so the body can clear them through its normal processes.
Firming and contouring
Radio frequency and Vela Sculpture heat the deeper layers of skin to stimulate collagen and elastin, which firms texture and smooths the look of cellulite.
Muscle definition
HIEMS uses an electromagnetic field to contract muscle far more intensely than voluntary effort allows, building density and shape underneath the skin.
Cellular recovery
Red and near-infrared light supports cellular energy and recovery between sessions, so the tissue you have just treated repairs well.
The Technologies
The seven technologies, and what each one does
Cryolipolysis (fat freezing)
Fat cells are more vulnerable to cold than skin, nerves or muscle. Cryolipolysis uses controlled cooling to damage fat cells in a targeted fold without harming the tissue around them, holding the drawn fold at around minus nine degrees Celsius across a session of forty to sixty minutes. The damaged cells are then cleared gradually by your body over the following weeks and months, which is why the visible change is progressive rather than immediate. Published studies typically report reductions of roughly 15 to 25 percent in the thickness of the treated fat layer over a few months. That figure describes the treated fold, not your total body fat.
Ultrasonic cavitation
Low frequency sound waves create rapid pressure changes in the tissue, forming and collapsing microscopic bubbles. The pressure disrupts fat cell membranes and releases their contents, which the body then processes and eliminates. It is generally used across broader areas than cryolipolysis and is comfortable enough that most people describe it as a warm humming sensation.
Radio frequency
Radio frequency delivers heat into the deeper layers of skin. That controlled heating prompts the production of collagen and elastin, the two proteins responsible for skin holding its shape. It is the tool that addresses texture and firmness rather than volume, which makes it valuable alongside any treatment that reduces fat, since removing volume from under loose skin without firming it can leave the area looking softer.

Vela Sculpture
Vela Sculpture combines four technologies in a single handpiece. A vacuum lifts and folds the skin so that bi-polar radio frequency reaches a controlled depth of five to fifteen millimetres rather than dispersing across the surface, and 940nm near-infrared light warms the tissue so that energy spreads more evenly through it. Mechanical rollers work at the same time, improving circulation and lymphatic drainage while stretching the fibrous bands that create the dimpled appearance of cellulite. Research on this combined approach shows measurable reductions in circumference across the abdomen, buttocks and thighs alongside improvements in how the skin looks.
Laser lipo
Low level laser energy prompts fat cells to release their stored contents through the cell membrane rather than destroying the cell outright. It is non-thermal, comfortable, and typically used as part of a combination rather than on its own.
HIEMS muscle building
High intensity electromagnetic stimulation triggers muscle contractions well beyond what you can produce voluntarily, thousands of them across a single session. Studies measuring muscle volume by MRI have recorded increases in the treated muscle in the region of 4 to 21 percent over a course of treatment, alongside modest reductions in waist circumference. It is the closest thing available to training a muscle you cannot reach, and it is why post-weight-loss programmes include it. Read more about HIEMS.
Red and near-infrared light therapy
Red and near-infrared wavelengths penetrate the skin and are absorbed by the mitochondria inside your cells, supporting cellular energy production and recovery. In a contouring programme it is a supporting treatment rather than a headline one, used to help the tissue recover well between the more demanding sessions.
Realistic Expectations
What results actually look like
Nobody can tell you in advance exactly how your body will respond, and anyone who does is guessing. Individual results vary considerably, and the honest answer to "how much will I lose" is that it depends on where you are starting, how consistent you are, and what your body does with the treated cells.
What can be described is the pattern. Changes from fat reduction treatments build gradually, because your body is clearing the treated cells over weeks rather than hours. Most structured programmes run over four weeks, and people generally start noticing a difference in how clothes fit before they see it clearly in the mirror. Firming and muscle changes tend to be felt earlier than they are seen.
The fat cells cleared during treatment do not return. The ones remaining in the area can still enlarge if your weight increases significantly, which is why maintenance and a stable eating pattern matter after a programme finishes.

Good Fit
Who this suits, and who it does not
A good fit if
- • You are close to your goal weight with one or two areas that will not respond
- • You have lost significant weight and are dealing with loose or lax skin
- • You want more definition in an area that has never held it
- • You are looking for gradual, non-surgical change and can commit to a four-week course
- • You would rather avoid anaesthesia, incisions and recovery time
Not the right time if
- • You are looking for weight loss rather than shape change
- • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- • You have a pacemaker or metal implants in the treatment area, which rules out several of the technologies
- • You have an active skin condition or infection in the area
- • You are expecting a surgical scale of change
If you have a medical condition or are unsure whether a technology is appropriate for you, raise it at your consultation. Some treatments have specific contraindications and it is a straightforward conversation to have before anything is booked.
The Programme
What a course actually involves
Contouring works cumulatively, so treatments are structured as programmes rather than one-off appointments. A typical course at LMC Slimming Centre runs over four weeks, with anywhere from one to three sessions a week depending on the intensity of the programme and the technologies involved.
Something is asked of you between those sessions. Several of the treatments work by breaking down fat cells and releasing their contents for your body to process, and it is your lymphatic system that does the clearing. Drinking plenty of water and staying active, even if that is only walking, supports that process and is the most useful thing you can do to get full value from a course. Our guide to post-treatment care covers this properly.
Programmes at LMC start at R1,900 for a focused cellulite course and run to R5,500 for the most intensive muscle and firming programme. Individual sessions are available from R300 if you prefer to start smaller before committing to a full course. Every programme begins with a consultation, which is where the plan is actually built around your body rather than assigned from a list.

Where to Begin
Choosing where to start
If you already know what is bothering you, this is roughly where each concern points.
| What is bothering you | Where to look |
|---|---|
| Dimpling and skin texture | CelluLogic, a focused four-week cellulite programme |
| General inch loss to get started | Detox Kickstarter, the introductory programme |
| Faster visible change from the outset | Detox Kickstarter with cryolipolysis added |
| A stubborn lower stomach | Belly Blaster, concentrated on the midsection |
| Definition and firmer skin | Tighten and Tone, the most intensive muscle programme |
| Thighs and buttocks | Drop a Pants Size, a localised lower body course |
| Loose skin after significant weight loss | 360 Slimming Reset, the full technology suite |
| Holding results you already have | Figure Maintenance, ongoing refinement |
If none of those quite describes your situation, that is what the consultation is for. Plans are regularly built as combinations rather than taken off a list.
If diet and training have stopped moving the area you care about, contouring is the right conversation to have.
Picture getting dressed six weeks from now and reaching for the thing you have been avoiding. The waistband sits where it should. The reflection matches the effort you have already put in. That is the point of all of this, and it starts with a conversation about what is realistic for your body.
Consultations at LMC Slimming Centre are R300 and take place at Floor 1, Design House, 121 Amkor Road, Lyttelton, Centurion. You will get a straight assessment of what the technologies can do for your particular concern, including if the answer is that you would be better served elsewhere.
